I have researched interior paint until I don't know which way is up. Aren't the colors suppose to be flat? Is my paint flat because it is 50 years old? Was it gloss when new? I saw the Suburban with the pulsar gray interior and it was gloss. My paint store mixed the PPG pearl beige by paint code and it was gloss. I have seen vendors list their interior paints as "lacquer". I thought maybe that was to get the pre-rubbed out satin sheen. What don't I understand?

The Pulsar Gray that we used on the interior of my 1954 Suburban was flattened to reduce the glare (we did the same with black interior parts). The Dupont 1954 Chevrolet Color Bulletin No.26 suggests using "Flattening Compund" where "subdued lustre is required" (referring to standard and deluxe interior paints).

We experimented with PPG flattening agent with the PPG (DCC) interior paints. We matched the luster to that of some protected interiors parts (and to match some NOS interior parts, such as a clock housing and part of the steering mast).

I'd say we ended up with a "Satin" to "Semi-Gloss" level of luster.

Thanks for the information. I wonder if the paints Chevy Duty, Carter, etc sell are "satin". I think I would want to use a 2K paint for the tough use area inside the cab. I have not found any paint codes for the pulsar gray yet. My paint store has "interior color" paint chips that are dead flat (BASF). By the way, your web site is very interesting and your trucks are beautiful.

I think that Chevy Duty's and Jim Carter's interior paints are lacquers (though, that might have changed).

The PPG DCC (2-part urethane) came with flattening agent in it. Here are phone numbers for whom I called in PPG (they gave me codes that I had mixed locally - I cannot find the codes).

I'm jealous. I haven't been able to find interior color paint chips anywhere. All I've heard are descriptions of my 1951's "Cambridge Grey". Haven't been able to see it yet. Would appreciate a sample, a link, or even a scanned image from anyone with the "right" color.

I bought mine from Chevies of the 40's and feel that it is correct. A quart was more than enough. Very close to what was left of the original.

Moneypit, got any pics of your interior?
Or scraps that you painted setting up your gun?
Or, would you part with a teeny sample of your leftovers?

I would really love to see the color before I shell out $70 a quart...

In regards to the PPG phone/fax numbers, the color library and tech line numbers are the same.
FAX has changed. I called, but they could not find a Pulsar Gray code # in their line.
