I'vr got the hammered finish pait from Jim Carter (even they don't know if I need a primer or not) and am getting ready to put it on the heater. Does anybody know which parts are painted black and which are painted in the hammered stuff?

I suspect the fan cage is to be black, and was planning on doing the inside in PPG single stage black so it will last longer. Any advice out there? What is the proper factory approximation?

Thanks!!!

Deve's site will tell you you paid too much for the paint, it is available in rattle can.
When I took my deluxe heater apart, I found the inside painted the same as the outside. But the squirrel cage was black. I did not go to the trouble of putting the hammer finish on the interior, no one will see it. I assembled it first and then painted it, therefore painted the screwheads holding it together. I think originally they were not painted. But I like the look of my heater better than Deve's who painted then assembled, leaving the screwheads unpainted.

I'm elcheapo and still using dial up, so I couldn't get them all to load. Yeah, I paid too much for the paint. Welcome to my world. I've paid too much for nearly everything but my compressor. If I didn't buy the wrong study guide, I'd have passed the test and become the Dean of the School of Hard Knocks.

So what you are saying is paint all but the fan in the bronze color. Right?

I'm thinking I'll do the whole inside in single stage black to make them last longer. It could be 20 years before I get it back in at the rate I'm going.

Okay, I'm in a surley mood. Deal with me, and thanks for the info!

Well, the motor was originally black also. I am sure you did not mean you were going to paint that hammer finish.

I used Eastwoods rattle can bronze hammer finish paint for my heater and it turned out very well.

No one has even questioned the color. It is very, very close to original.

Jake,
I just restored my heater on my '58. I used Hammerite brand paint, black color, which matched almost perfectly the original color. Both the inside and outside of the metal housing were painted with this type of paint on my truck. The fan assembly itself appeared to be painted black. The screws are suposed to be natural metal from what I saw. Also I advise pulling the contole wires out of their spiral metal outer casings. I used 0000 steel wool on the wire and some Triflow on both the wire and inside the casing. Both operate very smoothly and will help avoid breaking off fragil heater control levers. Hope this helps
