I recently purchased a 1955 series 1, chevy half ton and it has a large hole in the top of the dash. It is located about center between the gauges. It appears to be from the factory. I cannot find any pictures of other trucks with this same hole or one with an accessory installed there.
I'm new to old trucks and new to this board. I don't know yet how to post a picture here but I can e-mail a couple of pictures if it would help to see it.
Thanks, Steve

Steve, I think someone maybe put an original clock there at one time. Dutch

Are you maybe referring to the spot for the windsheild wiper knob?

My 54 had it's wiper knob on top of the dash ... you can see it here:

I got rid of that and used all 55 Chevy knobs, moving the wiper knob down:

No it's next to it. I also posted the question in the general board here at stovebolt and sent a pic to Joy. She posted it on the internet and has a link in her reply. You can see it is a large hole and is pretty close to center of the guages. Thanks for your help.

I've been to your site and really enjoy it. It has a lot of good information on it. Nice truck too.

Agree that it might have been for the original clock.

The other thread on this topic seemed to settle that the hole was not for the stock '54/'55 clock.

Here is the other thread.

Here is the location of the original clock. The quarter size hole through the dash is behind the center of the clock dial.

Of the guesses already made about the purpose of the hole in Steve's dash, I would now guess that it was used for an after market gauge (tachometer, for example) or for a GMC clock which mounted against the dash without the Chevy-style clock housing.

I am interested in hearing if Mongo's clock housing fits a '54/'55 Chevy truck dash.

Thanks for the picture. Since someone first wrote about that clock I've tried to find out what it looked like. You are right, this is very different from the hole in my dash. Thanks for helping rule that one out.
