Then the other day the fan lever broke. I'm a little familiar with these pot metal levers (pieces of s**t) from working on 1st gen Camaros. On those, they always seem to be broken, but you can get repair kits for the levers. I looked thru the Classic Industries catalog and only saw a fan lever...no repair kits, no temp lever. Anyone have any ideas on this? I'm tempted just to put a toggle switch on the dash for the fan motor as a temporary fix and maybe run a choke cable for the blend door...but it would be kinda nice to have the factory look to it. I think 64' has 3 levers? Hope this helps. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 | I got a replacement control (used one from RJ Truck Parts in Colorado....I was real happy with the deal. Good folks.) I've cleaned and lubed it and I was fixin to install it. I pulled the old one outta the dash and found a buncha cables attached to it: I dunno if this is the proper connection or if it was done this way when the temp lever broke (well before I got it.) If it's the correct connection, what is the purpose of the cable going to the center (fan switch) lever? the levers are available from AmericanClassic [garage sponser] orig type cast for $25, or in steel for $35
make sure the cables and what they operate move freely and the replacement unit is lubed, or yu'll be back in the same fix shortly - those things always break, as ya know

They were never a good idea but the cables need oil on a regular basis. They broke even 30years ago when they wern't that old, but the chev dealer had them in stock! Especially in the cold country when you were changing the selection they would"pop" | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 | Well, I put the cables onto the replacement control in the same position they were with the old one. I lubed the cables pretty well and things seem to operate smoothly. It's sure nice to be able to shut the fan off now. Here's a pic of the new control along with Smiley, the gearshift knob: I thought I'd cleaned it up pretty good, but it sure doesn't look like it in the pic. No big deal, I guess. The whole interior's gonna change color sooner or later. | | |
