I've seen some of you guys have done kheaders on your straight sixes, but I like my vehicles quiet. Can I do headers and keep that quiet mellow sound? Where do you guys get them made? Or, does some make/sell (or reman) exhaust manifolds?
Its a 68 C10, 250cid.

#16168 10/26/2003 2:58 AM | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 687 | Outside of an extreme case of good fortune, where you find an uncracked, unrusted replacement manifold from a salvage yard, your best bet for a leak-free exhaust experience is to purchase Tom Langdon's Stovebolt exhaust headers. They're made for the 230-250-292 series straight six engines. Tom's link is http://www.stoveboltengineco.com They don't come cheap, but then again nothing unique and of quality does. Will cost you around $300 once you add in shipping and the price of his header installation kit. There are other options. Clifford Performance makes short tube headers for your engine. I have a set in my garage. They're a great quality product. Both Hedman and Dynomax makes tube headers specifically for your application (1963-79 Chevy truck w/230-292 6 cylinder engines). I have a set of the Dynomax headers on my 66 stepside with a 292. Clears everything great and about half the cost of the Stovebolts. The factory cast iron manifold is no longer available OEM through GM (I checked already) and occasionally an exhaust manifold appears on Ebay. If it's an OEM on Ebay it won't go cheap. In answer to the sound question, yes, you can get a mellow sound with headers. It's all in the muffler. The Dynomax Turbo is quieter than the Flowmasters, and sounds good. Now, as to what to do for a manifold, there are pros & cons to tube headers. They will increase your power, and they do sound better. But, they will rust and dissipate more heat into the engine compartment. The way around these problems is to buy the headers with ceramic coating inside and outside. Clifford shows +$100 for this, and it is worth it. Another problem is you will lose your intake manifold heat, and will need to run a water heat to the intake. If you're not that concerned with performance, you need to look for a good used exhaust manifold, it will be a bunch cheaper. Try an ad in the swap meet. Another place to try is the 67-72 parts board
