old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2003 Posts: 1,271 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2003 Posts: 1,271 | Has anyone here installed any kind of an overhead console in their trucks?
I'm talking 1954.
I'm not ready to get into it yet, but have been toying with the idea ... someone asked about this over at Hotrodders.com and made me realize the problem involved in securing a console overhead in an AD truck; there's no place to mount to, up front by the windshield ... right?
Any ideas?

I enjoy your site alot of good pitures and explanations. I HAVE A 54 CHEVY ALSO and thaught about a console -good luck | | | | | Joined: May 2003 Posts: 1,271 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2003 Posts: 1,271 | Thanks, Marlo.

It had a speaker for the radio in it. We removed it and put a regular headliner in cause we it hung down so low we hit our heads on it whenever we got in. I've often thought of putting a modern one (I have one out of a D0dge D@kota) in one of my trucks. Here's a bad picture of the one that was in my father in laws truck, I'll see if I can find a better one to send ya'. Sometimes, David beats Goliath. Nobody talks, however, about how many little guys Goliath already beat into the ground. . .

I can see where you might bang your head into it but I would just change the design so that it isn't the same depth front to back, you know? I mean, leave the depth (from the roof, down) as is, up front by the windshield, but after 6-8 inches from the windshield, lose all that depth and taper it up closer to the roof so it's only coming down maybe 1-2 inches. The cool thing about that design is I'm guessing it would be easier to make a custom headliner in two smaller pieces than to make one large piece ... and it's a cool place to put some custom switches (like my backup light switch. PS - David slew Goliath with just one stone ... but he brought 5 stones with him. Was he of "little faith?" NO WAY!! Turns out (if you read a little farther into the story) Goliath had 4 brothers! HA! David really WAS sure of himself, eh?
