The numbers on the pad behind the starter are F13 1. The numbers on the pad behind the distributor are F0911A. It has hydraulic lifters, so I presume it is a car engine. Can someone tell me what year it is?

With it being a car engine, it probably has a fiber cam gear too. If you are planning on having it apart soon, I would recommend replacing the timing set and upgrading the cam gear to an aluminum one.

#16154 04/13/2005 6:05 PM | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 452 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 452 | Unfortunately, Chevy stopped using a year designation in the engine serial numbers in '57, so one has to go by the casting date on the block. I would say fab51 is correct about the casting date. In addition, the serial number gives the assembly plant (F=Flint), month and day that the engine was assembled (09/11), and the "A" suffix confirms it as the standard car 235.

Thanks for the info. It's running pretty well, so I hope I don't have to get into it anytime soon. I have no idea of the history of the engine. It could very well have already had the timing gear changed - I'm sure I'll find out someday.
Another question. When I use a strobe light to try to set the timing, I can't make the pointer show up in the window - that is and still have it run. With the engine not running, when I turn the engine so that I can see the pointer in the window, the rotor is pointing to number 2 or number 5. Any idea what's up with that?
