Now that I have a working wiper motor I would like to add a dual diaphram pump but were they a option on trucks or something only a car would have. Now that I have the wipers working the suppliers are out of stock and I think there is one on a car in the local old junkyard and are kits available,

I believe they were mostly used on big bolts with vacuum operated 2-speed axles. But, yes, they can be used on pickups or cars. I found one on a 235 that was going to go in a 1937 pickup. There happened to be a spare in the seat of the "project" truck. Should have snagged that one as well.

Kits are available from Then and Now Automotive. They'll also rebuild yours if you send it to them for about $50 plus the cost of the kit. Pretty reasonable, if you ask me. They do a fabulous job. I have many thousands of miles on the pump they rebuilt for me 4 or5 years ago.

Call them, their website is useless for ordering.

My '57 Big Bolt has HydroVac brakes and I added a 2 speed differential, the vacuum from the engine alone is sufficient to operate both of those components. My truck came standard with electric wipers so I can't comment on that function. I added a vacuum reserve tank when I incorporated the 2 speed but I think it would have worked ok regardless. The one difference with my truck vs. an earlier model is that it has the 283 V8 and may produce vacuum better than the inline 6.

On a big rig there's usually enough room to add a vacuum reservoir tank- - - - -the bigger the better. That usually eliminates the need for a vacuum booster fuel pump. I like repurposing medium-sized refrigerant gas tanks mounted under the bed or inside frame rails, with one way check valves to store enough vacuum for a few brake applications if the engine stalls.
