I have a 56 Chevrolet 235 12V that is rebuilt and ready to start. I am looking for suggestions on a generic alternator to use on it. It is on a start cart so I am not looking for harness adapters etc., the buyer may elect to use a different alternator in their vehicle. Does anyone have any ideas? I have brackets from the 9 o'clock position, but I can fabricate whatever is needed. I have heard a 7127 single wire would work, but I have had very good luck on this forum in the past so any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'm not a big fan of a one wire alternator in a vehicle, but it should work fine in a start cart. 7127 is what I use on my truck, but it is wired as a 3 wire system.

The only thing necessary to make a 3 wire setup work with either a 10-SI or a 12-SI alternator is an idiot light or a diode in the circuit to prevent run-on from feedback to the ignition system on shutdown. See the photo above- - - - -the white wire in the pic is the one that needs a diode. I use a small 2-wire peanut bulb socket with a red lens (not a LED) on my tractor to provide the excitation to kick off the charge. Jerry
