Summer is leaving and my thoughts always go to this boat.

My Dad bought this plywood Sande Ace in 1959 when I was 15. My friends were really jealous. It's in near perfect condition today. I took the now Mrs Wally for a ride when we were 16.

The 2nd pic shows us in 2024 on Washington's lower Hood Canal. I have 7 of those white Mercs to make sure I always have one running. Thanks for putting up with my nostalgia.

"Kiekhafer Mercury"- - - - - -the hotrods of outboards in the 1950s and 60s. After he won just about every trophy on the water, Carl Kiekhafer finally ran his company bankrupt racing a team of Chrysler 300s at Daytona and elsewhere on the AAA racing circuit before NASCAR, back when all the other round track guys were running Fords, Chevvies, Pontiacs, and Oldsmobiles. He supposedly said "You can make a small fortune racing- - - -but you gotta start with a BIG fortune!"

The pictures were frames from a drone video that our neighbor made. Has anyone made a drone video for their truck?

Very cool classic. I’ve always fancied the 50s-60s runabouts.
Was it kinda scary in the hood canal with something that was easily dwarfed by some of the full sized vessels? I’ve done a bit of crabbing in a 12ft aluminum 10hp while the navy was sailing by. Their wake would almost sink us.

How about a nuke sub surfacing under you. 😳
I’ve had a smallish cruise ship cut across my bow in Prince William Sound. Fortunately my boat is 21 ft, but we still needed to drastically cut our speed.

That is so cool, Wally! I am a wooden boat fan. When I was a kid, my parents owned a marina on a big lake in Quebec. We had a reputation for our wooden boat restorations (mostly Chris-Craft dual cockpit pre-war boats and Peterborough cedar boats). As a Naval Academy midshipman, I raced a wooden off-shore racing sloop (The former "Recluta" of Southern Atlantic racing fame). I still have a plan to build a boat...

I have been off shore (blue water) in wooden boats, metal boats and fibre glass boats since I was 12 (1st trip was in a wood-hulled sloop from Newburyport, Mass to Downeast Maine). NOTHING beats a wood boat!

Anyway, cool story and cool pics. More??

Kevin -- Did a cruise on a nuclear sub. But ... during the Newport-Burmuda '86 race we had a whale (I have no idea what kind of whale) cruise along side us for a bit and then about an hour later do the whole rising up out of the water and crashing down on its side in front of us thing. THAT was cool.
