Hey everyone. I've got a '54 1/2 ton I'm putting a 1962 passenger car 235 in. I'm using the original truck transmission, 3 speed on the column, and I was wondering if there was going to be any conflict between this newer engine mating up to the 54 trans, truck clutch fork, etc... Any advice will be appreciated

The only issue is using the correct bell housing and flywheel. If you are going 12V then you'll either need a 12V starter and flywheel or if using the original stomp starter (6V) you'll need the corresponding flywheel. The 6V starter can be used on 12V without issue. Take a gander at this Tech Tip to learn about the differences in starters and flywheels. The transmission will bolt right in (assuming you're using the original bell housing.

Welcome back classicfins. Although this thread topic is starts off engine related, it ties in with the Driveline Forum as it involves mating up to your truck driveline behind the engine.

For this forum, I'd want to know what type of front engine mount is on the passenger car 235, as I know what a '62 truck 235 front mount is and it requires some changes to fit your '54 truck front cross member.

Once you get past that front mount question, most of the rest of the swap falls into the "Driveline" area, dealing with the bell housing, flywheel, clutch and transmission mating to the original '54 stuff. Those questions should be asked in the "Driveline". wink

Was a 235 ever used in a 62 passenger car? I believe the only 235 application in 62 was in a limited number of trucks. If you're actually working with a 230 or 250 engine, there will be a considerable number of fit issues- - - - -bellhousing bolt pattern, engine length, and motor mount position problems. Can you post some pictures, and/or casting numbers?

According to the GM Heritage Center, 1962 was the last year the 235 was used in a passenger car. In 1963 Chevy went to the 230.

Correct. For 1963, the standard 6 cyl was the 230 for both passenger cars and pickup trucks.

I can attest to the 235 being used in the full size Chevrolet cars. I’m selling what is left of one.

I believe you will find that the accelerator linkage pivot on the 62 235 need to be moved forward. I have a 62 car 235 in my shop that a friend bought for his 51 car and he found that was a difference from the 216. We have not installed yet because of his health. It’s a 16000 mile mother that was complete with a Powerglide trans, not sure what he plans now.

I put a 54 truck 235 in my 51 3100 and there was no problem with the accelerator linkage.
