The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline Speedometer driven gear housing to case gasket

Is there a copper/fiber gasket between the speedometer driven gear housing that screws into the transmission case on a three speed, in a 41’ 1/2 ton? I can’t seem to find any information on how it seals, if it does.
Any help would be appreciated.

I looked through a number of Chevy Master Parts Books covering the '41 Model year (and others both before and after) and couldn't find any type of gasket or seal for the housing fitting into the transmission case.

Below is a picture of a later (but till similar design) speedometer driven gear/housing and drive gear set. The concave groove just under the hex head of the driven gear housing seems to be designed to permit a seal of some sort. It looks like it might even allow the use of an O-ring fitted in that groove that could be used to compress and seal the housing to the transmission case threaded opening.

Are you having a significant amount of oil leakage there?

No, I just don’t want it to leak in the future and drain the gear oil out of the u-joint. For right now I used some thread sealant in that groove.
