| | | | | Joined: Apr 2000 Posts: 247 Member | | Member Joined: Apr 2000 Posts: 247 | 700R4 is the same thing as a 4L60E, they just use a new name, plus it is electronically controlled (the meaning of the E in the name). 4L80E is the TH400 with an overdrive gear on it. You can think of the 700R4 (or 4L60E) as a TH350 with an overdrive gear. It's an oversimplification, but it makes it a lot easier to understand for most people.
Use the 700R4 for most applications. IF you REALLY do a lot of towing or have a heavy vehicle use the 4L80E. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 85 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 85 | Vaughn is right,except that with the 4l80E you will need a computer. The computer controls shifting through solenoids instead of mechanical valves as in the TH350/400 and 700R4.
The 700R4 uses the computer to control the Torque convertor lockup, but you can buy an aftermarket kit to by pass that function. The 4l80E was designed to work with a computer.
Be sure you get a later model 700R4 if you go that route. Jay | | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | | Anonymous Unregistered | 4L80's and 4L80E's have a GVW rating of 15,000 lbs or more depending on clutch packs used - 3/4ton and 1ton trucks have these trannys and they will also go behind Duramaxes in 2002 burbs. Much stouter than the 700R4's which are considered light duty trannys. I have had several people tell me that the computer interface for the 4L80"E" is not that tough to figure out. You can buy a programmable "smart" relay with 16 digital I/O and 2 analog inputs that could manage the function for under $100.
