I'm rebuilding the foot-operated starter on my 1957 Chevrolet 3100 with a 235 and could use some help identifying the correct starter drive.
The starter is a Delco-Remy 1107634, 12 volt. The drive-end housing/nose has 440 cast into it.
The starter had been having intermittent engagement problems. After taking it apart, I found that the old 9-tooth drive is considerably different dimensionally from the replacement NAPA/Echlin SRK104 drive listed for the application.
Old drive:
9 teeth Pinion width: 0.89" Pinion OD: 0.81" Length from back of pinion/drive body to beginning of shift-lever collar: 1.302" Shift-lever collar width: 0.763"
The big issue is the roughly 0.56" difference in the length between the pinion/drive body and shift-lever collar. The SRK104 does not appear capable of positioning the pinion in the same location as the old drive.
NAPA has ordered an SRK101 for me so I can compare it before buying it, but it won't arrive until the 27th.
I've also disassembled the starter, cleaned up the commutator and put in new bushing. The starter otherwise appears very rebuildable, so I'd prefer to keep the original-style foot starter rather than replace it with a modern starter.
For comparison, the overall armature shaft length, measured end-to-end, is 11.687".
I'm trying to determine:
What is the original Delco-Remy drive/Bendix part number for starter 1107634? Does anyone have an old Delco-Remy, AEA, Echlin or other parts catalog that gives the correct interchange? Is the 440 nose casting correct for a 1107634? Does the 11.687" armature/shaft in the photos look correct for a 1107634? Does anyone recognize the old long drive or know a currently available replacement for it?
I'll attach photos of the Delco tag, 440 nose casting, armature/shaft, old and new drives, and my measurement sketch.
LAW79 - Sorry to take a bit to get a response in here for you. Was out most of the weekend at the big Springfield, MO Swap Meet and had basically no ability to get to my resources.
The original starter for your '57 6 cylinder application is GM# 1107634 (actually used on '55-'59 stomp starters equipped trucks) and otherwise known in Delco Remy documentation as a "Cranking Motor Group 53-H" unit.
Below are screen shots from a 1969 Delco Remy detailed parts listing for your info and reference that covers all the details of the "53-H" starter. Just find your part# 1107634 and read across the columns to find the related component parts.
Also included are a couple of Chevy Master Parts Book screenshots showing additional info.
The correct starter drive is listed as GM# 1931585 (Delco Remy D-2002) and there are several NOS units for various prices on eBay now, like this NOS one.
The armature is listed in the Chevy Master Parts Books as GM# 1926626 , 11 - 13/16" O.L. (with a GM# 1935851 as a service replacement in my Delco Remy reference). You can find both NOS GM# 1926626 and New Armatures for Delco Starter 1926626 1935851 readily available.
On the "440" casting you've posted, I could not confirm or deny if it's the right one for your starter, but if it has worked to this point, I wouldn't have any concern if I were you. There was one reference in a Chevy Master Parts Book that referenced a "cast 700" for the 1955-57 starter drive nose, but other listings for the part eliminated the "cast 700" when described in other books.
Hopefully these references will help you get what you need to get your starter back to good as new.

Gdads51, thank you very much for taking the time to dig all of that information up. This is exactly the kind of documentation I was hoping to find, and it is extremely helpful.
I really appreciate you going through the Delco-Remy and Chevrolet parts information and providing the original starter number along with the drive, armature, and other component information. I downloaded and saved all of the pages you posted with my truck documentation so I’ll have them for future reference.
This gives me a much better understanding of what should actually be on the truck and what I need to look for as I go through the starter.
Thanks again for taking the time to research all of this and post it. I really appreciate the help.
Glad to be of help to you and any other 'Bolter that may need the info some day in the future. I've always enjoyed hunting for this level of info, so it just makes it even more enjoyable when I can share it with others.
Let us know how the rebuild works out.
