Has anyone found an "easy" way to remove the tranny? The disconnect from the u-joint is fairly easy, but the torque tube is in the way to be able to slide back the tranny. I jacked the tube as high as it can go, but still in the way.

Joe - Where do you have the jack stands/supports set up for the rear of your truck? If the rear of the truck is supported on the frame, with rear axle hanging down, the jack under the front of the torque tube should be able to raise it high enough for the transmission to clear. If the axle is resting on jack stands, it might reduce the range of motion and not allow enough room to pull the transmission.

Did you leave the collar and the ball on the torque tube when you disconnected it and slid it back to access the u-joint? If it's still on the torque tube, you may want to remove it if its not allowing the torque tube to elevate as far as possible.

Pictures would help offer more/better suggestions. wink

Will try the hanging axle method. It looks like tranny has to pull back about 6" to clear bell housing. I'll check for any interference with collar and ball. Thanks for the input.

The ball will slide off of the torque tube if necessary, and then the torque tube can be lifted an extra couple of inches. Then cut a piece of 2 X 4 to slide into the frame rails to keep the torque tube raised.

Don’t forget to use “guide pins” to support the transmission as you slide it back. Easily made with a couple of bolts with the heads cut off. Be thankful that you aren’t working on a Buick with a torque tube. The entire rear end assembly has to be dropped and pulled back to access the transmission. They should have taken some lessons from their sister company Chevrolet!🤣

Way way back when I did mine, I raised the back of the truck, placed to jack stands under the frame rails at the back, loosened the leaf spring axle U bolts. This allowed a pretty easy lift of the torque tube all the way up to the bottom of the cab and as Hotrod Lincoln suggested, placed a 2x4 in the frame rail to support the torque tube during its high position.
