The disconnect from the u-joint is fairly easy, but the torque tube is in the way to be able to slide back the tranny. I jacked the tube as high as it can go, but still in the way.

If the rear of the truck is supported on the frame, with rear axle hanging down, the jack under the front of the torque tube should be able to raise it high enough for the transmission to clear. If the axle is resting on jack stands, it might reduce the range of motion and not allow enough room to pull the transmission. Did you leave the collar and the ball on the torque tube when you disconnected it and slid it back to access the u-joint? If it's still on the torque tube, you may want to remove it if its not allowing the torque tube to elevate as far as possible. Pictures would help offer more/better suggestions.

Then cut a piece of 2 X 4 to slide into the frame rails to keep the torque tube raised. Jerry

Easily made with a couple of bolts with the heads cut off. Be thankful that you aren’t working on a Buick with a torque tube. The entire rear end assembly has to be dropped and pulled back to access the transmission. They should have taken some lessons from their sister company Chevrolet!🤣

This allowed a pretty easy lift of the torque tube all the way up to the bottom of the cab and as Hotrod Lincoln suggested, placed a 2x4 in the frame rail to support the torque tube during its high position.
