My 54 has power brakes installed by a PO. Photos show the vacuum line from manifold to brake booster with a tee to a line going into the cab. Other photo shows a canister under the dash with incoming vacuum at the top, near outgoing plugged off, and back outgoing (dangling down) to the wipers. Since I am changing to electric wipers, is there any need for this canister?

Yes- - - - -that canister includes a check valve, which will hold enough vacuum after an engine stall to allow a couple of power boosted brake applications before the pedal effort increases exponentially. You should re-plumb the output to the brake booster, with a larger diameter hose, however.

No, it won't work for your brakes the way it is plumbed. It does have a check valve, but the line between the canister and booster is open to the intake. You would need to add a check valve before the " T " fitting and remove the one on the canister before it would do any good on the brake booster. It's a reservoir for the vacuum wipers only. The lines coming back out of the canister are not big enough to work with the brake booster, or should I say big enough to act fast enough on the booster. Booster need 3/8" line and fittings.

Typical vacuum on a stock engine will be around 18 to 21 inches. My 250 will idle around 20 inches. On a long down hill with no throttle opening, the vacuum can go really high, pegs the gauge, of course it goes to zero at full throttle, 1 to 2 inches at full rpm and full throttle.

I have the same setup; electric wipers and power brakes.

I have a single hose from the manifold to the brake booster. No extra canister. Keep it simple!

Yes, I do have enough residual pressure to allow the brakes to work a couple of times after an engine stall. I believe the booster has a built in check valve for this.

More reserve vacuum is always better. I've added an extra vacuum tank to some applications, such as trucks with a vacuum shift 2 speed rear axle, by recycling a disposable 15 pound Freon canister, bracketed under the bed or inside a frame rail. An inline check valve between the engine and the reservoir will prevent vacuum loss in case of an engine stall. Then plumb the accessories such as brake booster, wipers, etc. to the reserve tank(s).

I'm running a scroll vacuum pump from "Master Power Brakes". It's whisper quiet and no canister required. My 292 has a 6-71 so no manifold vacuum.
