I have a 12 bolt rear from 72 chevelle and want to convert the front to 5 lug drums on my 59 3100 apache panel. I heard that 53-54 chevy car drums and hubs are a bolt in deal. Does anyone have this stuff? and do I need the backing plates or will the truck ones work. Can I have the stock hubs and drums drilled to 5 lug?
Any other ways to do this besides going disc brakes.
Please help me if you can.

#16081 01/19/2005 4:50 AM | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | yes, the earlier 5 stud car hubs will fit right on your spindles and require no other mods [besides 5 hole drums] the brake shoes and cyl's are identical - don't try drilling your drums - put an ad in the swap here, or look around the wreckers and swap meets - should be lots available down there w/ every one goin to newer subframes on the hot rod cars - I got a few sittin around here, but ain't lettin go of'em! #16082 01/19/2005 6:37 PM | Joined: Mar 2003 Posts: 49 Member | | Member Joined: Mar 2003 Posts: 49 | Thanks for the info, I found a pair of 54 car hubs and drums on the internet last night from Chevys of the 40s ph#1 800 999-2438 he said they have some good used ones for $150.(hubs,drums and backing plates)I have already converted the ball bearings to the later style via a golden state bearing kit, will this cause any problems?
