The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Belt wear ?

What would cause this wear? It does have about 10,000 miles on the belt. Just extreme wear in two areas. It's the thick belt on my 235. Started making noise right after I rebuilt the 3 speed. Thank you in advance.

I'd be looking for a solid belt instead of the that ribbed one.

It lasted 10K miles, no problems or complaints. But the wear is quite odd.

Just zooming in, it kinda looks like there were voids in the belt construction. Could have just been a poorly made belt that had defects that caused rapid and uneven wear.

I don't think so. But it does have a strange wear pattern.
I replaced it with the same type of belt. I'll keep an eye on the new one.
It was a NAPA belt almost 8 years ago. Assuming it was made decent then but who knows.

Belt tension plays an important part in life expectancy, if it was too loose it could have been slightly damaged each time you started the engine, causing a little slippage and wear at certain spots. Once that area is damaged it will continue to wear. Also, take a look at pulley alignment AND the plane of the pulleys compared to each other.

I wonder if some rubber weakening contaminate got onto the belt. We will never know about that...

I checked the pulleys. All lined up straight. The belt was loose towards the end..wear I'm guessing. Ok.

Pulley v.s. belt width correct?

When installing a new belt/chain; adjust the belt/chain tension then rotate the assembly a bit, and check tension in several spots. If you throw the belt on and set tension in one spot it may be good, but real tight or loose in another. If there's a tight spot somewhere it will wear, and just keep wearing rapidly in that spot. Replace belt and check tension in multiple locations. Also check for an out of round pully (generator, water pump, harmonic balancer).
