12K lb item about an 8 foot square foot print, going 1800 miles.

Just a thought, but you might get more responses if you can provide more details.

From where to where (generally speaking).

"8 foot square foot print" doesn't give anything in the way of the height of the item. An extra tall item (if over 108" high) will require transport on an open to the elements trailer (and tarped for weather protection if needed), or a specialty trailer configured to enclose a taller than that item. 8 foot square would just fit width wise into most standard dimension 53' enclosed trailers, but leaves you doing something different if the item extends beyond the 8 foot measurements anywhere above the base foot print.

With an item that size/weight, you'll need to consider loading/unloading of the item as well, unless you have the equipment to handle that process yourself (either loading or unloading as the case may be).

Your best bet might be contacting some commercial carriers that service your area for cost quotes.

Blue Lane Freight is a trucking company owned by Fastenal. They will ship palletized dry freight from one Fastenal store to another. Try contacting them with the dimensions and weight of your item for a quote. I'm not sure if they service your area or not, but it might be worth a try.

Its a machine tool. I would not want to have to pick it up at a fastenal.

I have to also ask for more info to help you. From where to where? Will the seller load it?
How will you unload it and get it in your shop?

Sounds like it could be an older Cincinnati vertical mill.

Don, maybe he should do what you and I do- - - - -hook up the truck and trailer and go get the machinery ourselves. That's how I'm planning to get a 20 foot CONEX container full of engines, and a big lathe from Texas to Tennessee. The 24 foot gooseneck I just bought, and my F-450 flatbed truck should handle it nicely. I just hauled a big flycutter cylinder head mill and a power jet washer on my 18 foot bumper pull trailer, with a combined weight of around 8K pounds.

I would not waste time or $ on something like a Cincinnati vertical. Vertical mills are way to limited on what they can do, unless its a turret mill, yeah not a hogging machine but very universal.
One of my favorite mills back when I did that work, was a Number 5 Cincinnati Verci Power with a dependent universal head on the over arm, and 50 hp, and yes used that HP at times too .Steel plate, 6 inch wide cut, .5 deep, and 30 ipm if memory is correct, horizontal spindle. Me too since 16 or so, at high school, and voc tec.

Great Jerry how much would you charge? LOL I do not have a truck capable of going to the store with its also a stinking ford f250.
