Freshly rebuilt starter and new 168 tooth flywheel.
I’ve got too tight of clearance and starter gear sometimes will not mesh. How do you shim the three bolt starter away from the flywheel on these bellhousing style starters?

There is a metal plate that is installed behind the starter and attaches to the front of
the bellhousing on V-8 applications. If it is missing, it may be the problem.

Check the runout from the crankshaft centerline to the bearing retainer hole in the bellhousing with a "last word" dial indicator.. I believe there are offset dowel pins available to correct misalignment between the block and the bellhousing.
