Factory assembly does not show photo or reference for my spare tire carrier on my 1950 Chevy (1953 and up in the book). Do you have anything on record (photos) pertaining to this issue. Trying to figure out the built of the 3/8 pin that slides inside of the track that needs to be about 2 1/2 inches long. Did the pin have rollers or was it just a straight pin? and the securing of the carrier bracket. I had a homemade bumper on the rear end and don't have exact details on its mounting. Hope I'm in the right Forum.

It is just a simple 3/8" steel round stock pin.

According to the Chevy Master Parts Books the “pin” is listed as “Roller (3/8” dia. x 2-23/32 long) - GM# 594485.

Just a simple section of 3/8” round stock that rolls in the support and track. Nothing else required to hold it in place.

Not sure what you’re asking on the “securing of the carrier bracket”???

I think I now understand what you're asking on the "securing the carrier bracket" question. The hardware that holds the strap and spare tire up, yes?

Below is a screenshot from a 1954 Chevy Master Parts Book showing the 1950 and earlier style spare tire carrier for the 1/2 ton. It's actually a picture of a slightly earlier version that has a different "track" design and mounting than yours, but the parts that make up what holds the carrier and spare tire up are the same.

I don't know if this is relevant but here is the one off my 53 3100.

Mick - The carrier design changed in '51 to what yours is. It's a different design and layout than the '50 and earlier carriers that CLSnMO is seeking to restore on his truck.

Wondering if you might suggest correct size for the hanger bolt. I've made a 3/8 " by 12 1/2 length with a 1 3/4 " right angle on the end for hanging the bolt in a bracket I found that fits on top of the panel at the hole under the bed. Thanks

I went out and measured my J bolt. 1/2" thick. 8" long at the bend, 2" wide at the bend.

CLSnMO - Just a quick little shout out this morning that you should go look at this recent thread from John "UtahYork". It seems I missed another Bolters picture that shows "ALL" the pieces (except the J-hook and securing hardware) to your 1950 spare tire carrier and I wanted to update the info I've provided to fix my oops.

Turns out the diagram in the Master Parts Books aren't completely accurate, as it doesn't display everything for the carrier in question. Hope this further helps in finishing the answers to your question.

The original pin that slides in the track is just 3/8'' round stock that it rounded off on the ends so it slides smoothly in the track...{ I like to JB Weld them in when I replace them }.

There is not much documented in any of the parts books when it comes to the 1947-1950 underbed carriers...Here is what I have been able to locate....

Way back in 2001 I was going crazy, looking for a original under bed spare tire carrier. Just couldn't find a complete setup, but then found online a reproduction carrier that American Classic Truck Parts was selling. The metal is much more stout as compared to the original carrier and it installed perfectly. One of these days, I'll drop the spare wheel down to show its mounting to the bottom slider.
