What is standard procedure to remove steering wheel on a 1947 chevy 3100? Will it require a puller or will it come off just by pulling up with your hands?
I borrowed a steering wheel puller from Advance Auto parts but as it turned out mine wasn't rusted on and came off without any need for the puller.
Go get one anyway. Advance, Autozone, O'Reilly, etc all lone those tools for free.
You pay the full price on your credit card and when you bring it back they refund you the full amount.
Take off the horn button by prying it up with a little flathead screwdriver.
Remove the big nut in the center of the shaft and install your puller or pull the wheel up with your hands if it isn't corroded into place.

I have a home built puller, but like Otto, I just popped it off with my hands.

Put the nut back on flush with the shaft to protect the threads. Put some upward pressure on it and give the shaft a tap with a hammer. If you are having trouble with a puller give the bolt on the puller a tap or a smack if needed.
I would not put any pressure like that on a 70 year old steering wheel. Rent or buy a puller. I just say that cause I have literally pulled thousands of GM steering wheels in my day. I`ve seen guys pull them off by hand and knee. Those threaded holes are there for a reason.

If it offers any resistance, of course use a puller.
In my case, it slid right off with no force.

Possibly. It would have had to been more than 25 years prior to my removing it, however. Ol' Roy sat in a friend's garage doing very little driving for all of that time

I picked up a pretty good brand name puller for just $3. It looks like it might have been used just a couple times.
