The rear main seal contact area is pitted. I have polished it but I’d still not great.
I have a crankshaft grinder, so it is not a big deal to grind it undersize, probably take about .005”
I have little experience with the rope style seal,
How do they handle an undersized journal ?

I've had pretty good luck with using the thin stainless steel strip that secures the rubber in a windshield wiper as a shim behind a rope seal to make up for wear, or a seal surface that's been ground undersize. Use a few drops of red LocTite to help secure the shim to the block and main bearing cap before installing the seal.

I have been using the rope stye for almost 70 years. You tap on the rope and then trim a little off any way so a little under size shouldn't make any difference.
