I bought this engine about 5 years ago from a guy who told me it was "rebuilt". It has resided in my home garage until being moved to my recently purchased shop. The casting # 3835911 tells me that it is a 1953-55 235, 150 hp, Blue Flame, 2 WP holes, H cam, PG.

The date code is 5 11 4, which I think translates to May 11th 1954.

What does the serial #. 0627939F54Y tell me?

0627939 = Unit Serial Number for the year of manufacture (beginning at 1001)

F = Built at the Flint plant

54 = Model year 1954

Y = Passenger Car 235 originally assembled with a Powerglide automatic transmission

The “Powerglide” 235’s were equipped standard with a hydraulic cam and lifters, where all other 235’s were built with solid cam & lifters. Detailed specifications for the passenger car “Powerglide” 235 engines can be found in the “engine specifications” section of the 1954 Chevrolet Data PDF.

I have no experience with hydraulic lifter 235 engines. I will read up on them.

After my current project (1937 Chev Coupe Express) is drivable; I intend to graft this 235 engine into a 1950 Chev half ton that has a 3 spd on the column.

With an actual shop, a lot more will get accomplished.

You may want to verify which type of lifters has been installed, since your engine has been rebuilt. It's not uncommon to see solid lifters replace the hydraulic lifters at rebuild time.
