I am at the point in my build where I have to situate the brake/clutch pedals and the drive-by-wire accelerator pedal. The C/B pedal shafts are pretty much fixed... still have to attach the actual pedals to the shafts. It is the accelerator pedal that I am looking for advice on. See pictures.
The first picture is the brace that holds the accelerator pedal. The second picture is the accelator pedal attached to the brace. Both are held on by a magnet on the right side for purposes of the pictures. There are 3 holes that anchor the brace (to the toe board/firewall, eventually). The leftmost hole is clear in the pictures. One hole on the right is covered by the magnet. The third hole is at lower right. In order to hold the accelerator pedal in the right position (roughy), I need to have the left brace hole approximately 2 inches off of the toe board/firewall and the bottom right hole approxumately 1.25 inches off of the toe board/firewall. That will give be a level face upon which to mount the accelerator pedal. OK... I am gonna proceed to build a platform (to be attached to the toe board/firewall) upon which to mount the brace for the accelerator pedal. I am open to alternative ideas, especially from someone who has installed a drive-by-wire accelerator pedal in the 3100 cab. Thanks
My approach there was to take a 3" piece of 2" angle and clamp it to the firewall, then clamp a piece of 3/16 plate to the side perpendicular to the firewall, then clamp the pedal to that.
I fiddled with it and adjusted all the clamps until I was happy with the pedal location, then welded the plate to the angle and drilled holes to mount the pedal to the plate.
I trimmed it all down to look nice, then realized that I was flexing the firewall from how much it was levering on the mount.
My fix for that was to weld a 6"x6"x3/16" plate to the bottom of the angle and bolt that down. Probably overkill, but it got the job done.
Is that the original bracket for the pedal? If not, you might want to add a small gusset from it to the platform to keep it from flexing left to right.
That is the original bracket from a a GM Connect and Cruise LS3. For a number of reasons I am going to keep the pedal mounted to this bracket and concentrate on providing a "platform" for that original bracket where the platform would be secured to the cab toe board/firewall in such a way that when I bolt the original bracket to that platform, the pedal is where I want it.
Your comments have also got me thinking more about the thickness of the platform... I would start of course, with cardboard and then translate that to 20 gauge. Once I got the platform correct, then I would translate that to a thicker gauge of steel and weld her up.
It might take me a while (I am both old and slow) but I will publish the end result when all is said and done.
The "platform" for mounting the accelerator pedal to the firewall is complete in 16 gauge steel. Designing and building it became easier once I isolated the platform solely to the firewall and avoided trying to bridge to the kickboard. By staying on the firewall, we had two essentailly vertical faces to consider in the design. This allowed for a simple "box" type platform to be implemented.
In the accompanying pictures, the platform is held in place by magnets. The final solution will be welded in place.
So there will be NO physical connection between the pedal and the throttle?

Otto... it is "drive by wire"... the blue tape is covering an electronic plug. Once I do the ECU setup, a set of wires has to come thru the firewall from the ECU and insert into that plug...that is the only physical connection for the accelerator pedal.
A little more perspective... the engine is an LS3 crate engine.
I guess I should have said no mechanical connection between pedal and throttle.
