I plan to install an early 80s MY6 transmission in my 54 pickup with a 235. These units came with three (at least) different bolt patterns for attaching to the bellhousing. Mine is known as the hybrid pattern ---see photo. The first major question is will I need another bellhousing or will an adapter plate be sufficient? I used one of these units with a standard Muncie bolt pattern behind a 350 truck engine, and it was a direct bolt-in. If this becomes too much of a difficult exercise, I also have a Ford T170 I can use. As before, the main question is different bellhousing or not? I know a T5 swap would be much easier, but I have been that route, and 4 speeds w/ OD is plenty adequate.
The MY6 is a rugged 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive (often called the NP440 or "New Process 833") used in 1981–1987 GM half-ton trucks, frequently paired with 6.2L diesel engines. I would think that as long as the front bearing retainer hole is the same or close, you should be able to drill and tap the 235 bell housing. I did this when I added an NV4500 behind my '58 235, works like a charm.

MY6 is also very high geared in 1st & reverse. They came along about a year into my GM wrenching career. Most customers were less than thrilled with them. Rancher uncle had one, low range was required most the time any terrain encountered to keep from burning the clutch out.
In places with less terrain it's a good transmission.
