Been thinking about adding a automatic trans in my 37 but the cost of the adapter is a little more then I would like and could have a running 250 and TH 350 for less. Did some measuring at work and a 235 and a 250 are very close but the water pump on the 250 is too low like on the 55 to 62 235 so that got me thinking. I was wondering has anyone ever thought of adapting a 54 water pump on a 250.

Not possible- - - -but a jack shaft can be fabricated to mount the fan a little above the water pump pulley with a couple of pillow blocks and a piece of round steel rod. Drive the fan with a very short V belt and a 2-groove pulley on the water pump.

Has no one made an adapter similar to those used on the early 216's to move the water pump up into position?

The adaptor would have to be sticking out from the front to have enough room for coolant to get into the block, this would put the water pump even farther forward creating a whole other problem. A 250 in a '37 is tight as it is, moving the pump will make it worse. It's not ideal, but an electric cooling fan solves a lot of issues with radiator location.

My radiator is as far forward as it can be, I cut part of the chin sheet metal away and removed the cross bar in front of the radiator just to gain more room. The 17" fan still goes below the core and filling it with coolant takes a 6" hose on a funnel to reach the opening.

A jack shaft won't work, the thermostat is just above the pump, so you would need even more cobbled up parts to make it work.

"We do the difficult stuff at once- - - - -the impossible just takes a little longer!" I think I just found my next project!

EDIT: I just looked at a 230 engine I've got stashed away- - - - -same block and cylinder head as a 250- - - - -there's room to raise the thermostat housing a little (up to about the center of the valve cover) and use a 2-sheave crankshaft and water pump pulley. A pillow block on a home brewed bracket bolted to the pump housing and a jackshaft can be used to center the fan at the same height as a stovebolt engine.
