What year 3 speed is this transmission? It does have the long cone rear piece. 1955-1957, Vette? Car or truck ? Thank you. It was given to me years ago when I bought a pile of A D. Truck parts. Todd
Todd - Can you post a picture of the entire transmission so we can see the side cover assembly too?
Preliminary info based just on the casting numbers shows the main case was used in many car and truck applications (see years and models indicated). The tail shaft extension housing was also used on many different truck and car applications, with at least one reference I found (not shown below) that it was used on 1963-65 Corvettes with 3 speeds.
The main case date casting code "K1555" seems to indicate it was built November 15th, 1955 (K = November 15 = day of the month 55 = build year). That would align with a 1955.2 2nd series truck if was originally a truck unit.
There should be a stamped identification number on the transmission main case. Looking at the rear of the transmission, it should be stamped onto a machined flat surface on the right rear upper corner of the main case. It should include a letter identifying the plant that built it, followed by 1 or 2 digits for the month and 1 or 2 digits for the day of the month built.
Hope this is of some help.

55 trucks with a 6 cylinder engine used the same side cover and the same shift levers and clock positions as the earlier trucks. The 1-R shift fork is wider to match the 1-R slider gear. The remainder of the internal components are different however. Fred

Fred, Copy that. I'm trying to correctly identify it so someone can use it or the parts since I have No use for it, minus the shift fork I took from it. Todd
Side cover number comes back as 60-63. Here's a snip from a parts catalog found on gmpartswicki.com.

Very common practice since that basic transmission was used in several configurations up until 67 in both cars and trucks. The long rear housing was used in trucks through 63 and cars through 57. The short rear housing was found in cars from 58 up and trucks from 64 up. Fred

Todd - The “M” is for “Muncie”, 11 = November and “25” = 25th day of November. This all coincides with the previous decoded casting date code info.
The stamped square with a “2” inside is likely to indicate being built on 2nd shift.

Todd - Here’s a page from another Chevy Master Parts Book on the side cover ID.
GM# 3845157 is listed here for 1955.2 (2nd Series) thru 1959 3 Series 1/2 tons also. I think we can surmise that this side cover is original to transmission.
