Has abybody seen any pictures of how the spare tire carier looks on a 1946 1/2 ton.. I found one (original) but putting it together is a real puzzle.. The hook says it goes to the cross member at the tail gate but that metal is pretty thin... I thought I better ask the experts first..

That is where it is on mine. While this pic was taken to see the gas tank mounted under the bed, you can see the hanger and wingnut and its position. There should already be a hole there to mount it. If you need more pics, pm me.

The spare tire hanger for my 41 half-ton is entirely different. It consists of a 1/2" diameter hook, a long nut with a groove milled in it, and a lock which snaps onto the nut and fits into a socket on the carrier. The hook does hook onto the bed crossmember. The last 5 pictures in my galllery are of it.

The lock is correct and a nice accessory to have, but the hook is incorrect. Someone has made that and reformed the hanger on the underside of the truck to accept the hook. The hook should be a "T" shaped hanger with tread on the long part which hangs down to go thru the the actual carrier. The part under the truck should have the two sides spread far enough apart for short part of the "T" to fit in the two grooves and the long threaded part of the "T" to hang down between each side. It goes through a hole in the carrier and the nut, or lock, goes on that long part.

I have 33 pics of my sliding spare tire carrier project on my Fliker site. It is "supposedly" OE but I added a bit of length to it to accomodate larger spare than OE bias, and as metal looked weak I added another angle, and chaged thin angle for 3/16.
Give me yell if you have questions.

My '46 didn't have one when I got it. Here's what I did.

Post from 2009, but Thank You for the pictures! This will greatly help me in getting my spare tire bracket installed.

John

I wasn’t able to open his Flickr account. I do have the free account. Anyways I have the carrier mounted to my truck which I believe is original. So if you wanted some pics of mine let me know

I would certainly like to see how your tire carrier is mounted. When I took my truck apart, the spare tire carrier was mounted to the center bed board with three carriage bolts. I see in Brett's pictures that he used a piece of angle iron across the frame.

Here's a link to Brett's pictures. LINK

Ok pics from bottom from plate that holds hook. About 17 1/2. To the 3 bolts about 36 1/2 from same plate. Inside of box from metal (where boards end) to bolts seems like 36ish. I’ll add another post with my other parts

Some pics might be duplicates. After I got it all together and up I was unable to hook it up because the PO welded the muffler bracket in the way. Arg so I believe the long bracket is actually for a panel truck but I found rusted one on ebay. Mine is bolted through bed and then a board

Good to see that your bracket was also attached to the bed board. That's how I was planning to attach mine, but I'm also looking at angle iron going side to side on the frame. I didn't want to put holes in the bed board, but not against doing it. Thanks for the pictures.

I have the under bed carrier arm for my 1947 (first series EC102) GMC. Does anyone have details on the rotating pin for the swing down arm? Length and diameter? Source of supply?
Thanks in advance,

This may help you out. It looks like locally fabricating the rotating pin could be pretty easy.

I cut the ends off of a grade 8, 3/8” bolt. Seems to fit ok. I sawed it long and ground the length to fit. The 3/8” is a tad loose but seems to work. This is on my 46 1/2 ton Chevy truck.

You can take a trip to your local hardware store and pickup a section of 1/2" OD steel rod and cut the piece to length for your needs. Here's just one example from one of the big box places.
