Ok, Upon further inspection of my 1950 3 speed it appears one of the gears is loose or off track? #22 on picture. Circled on picture . It's All the way towards the Rear. See picture from manual. The gear the rear fork controls ? Thoughts?
That’s the first/reverse slider gear. It should slide freely on gear 21 and the rear fork has to straddle the gear. If the side cover was put on with the shift fork forward of the gear it will not work right.

Can the first / reverse gear slide off (Backwards) off of the gear #21? I'm wondering if I did that fussing / removing the cover or is something broken? Since the transmission is still in the truck I have limited room / access. Todd
Just for clarification, was it shifting correctly before you had this issue? A little history on the issue would help tremendously.

The rear fork (when cover is installed and fork straddling gear #22) should not allow the gear to escape. I think it's likely the gear moved past the fork when you removed the cover assembly.

With your description of difficulty shifting between second and third, you're going to have to pull it and investigate. The 1st-reverse slider gear is likely not the issue. Like Dan said, it probably moved to the rear after you pulled the side cover. [on edit] UNLESS the shifter lever in the side cover isn't working freely. Check that out first. Maybe the interlock linkage is binding up. Does the 2-3 shift drum move freely by hand in the truck? If so, the issue may be with the side cover.
