HI, Does anyone know of a book I can order that will ID SBC engine numbers for the 327s and year(s) they were made? I know lots of books cover corvette engines, etc. Don't need that! lol. I need the block ID numbers for SBCs that were built into trucks. I don't if that would include a few numbers or lots of numbers. A title, or author's name, or some specifics would get me started. Thanks for any help, ideas, etc. This is re a 1962 C60 Chevy truck. One of the engine options was a 327, 250 HP. Mike.
This doesn't seem to have engine serial number decodes, but it does have lots of info on 1962 Chevy trucks. I'm guessing Chevy may have detuned the 327 a bit when offering it in trucks. They still offered the 348 and 409 V8 engines in the larger 80 series trucks.
Following is just memories of a car crazy 15 year old boy who worked in a gas station on weekends, but couldn't afford a car.
1962 was the first year Chevy offered the 327 engine. It was available in full size cars and Corvettes at 250 (with a Rochester 4GC carb) and 300 horsepower (with a Carter AFB carb) at 10.5:1 compression ratio. Both had hydraulic lifter cams. The Corvettes also offered solid lifter cams at 340 horsepower with a Carter AFB and a 360 HP Rochester fuel injection engine, both at 11.25:1 compression.

Mike - With only a little time this morning, here's one tidbit of info I extracted from a 1962 Chevrolet TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) that identifies the '62 60 Series 327 engine serial number Suffix ID letters (found at the tail end of the stamped engine serial number) on the left front engine block pad.
More info when I can.

The original engine in my '65 C60 school bus was a 327 and it had four bolt mains. I sold it to a guy who installed it into his FJ40 Land Cruiser, and got good money for it due to the stout bottom end.
Here's a bigger extract from the TSB I posted from above. Shows the header/title of the TSB along with the two sections that include all the "Truck Engine" options by model/series. The 327 was definitely available as an option for the 60 Series trucks, Looks like the 261 6 cylinder was the standard engine, with the 327 as an RPO.
Here's a link to a extensive Chevy V8 Casting Codes listing that has a lot of info. Looking through that and fact checking on the web, I found 3 possible 1962 327 block casting codes:
3782870 - 1962-67 327 2 bolt main (not specified for any specific vehicle) 3789817 - 1962-67 327 2 bolt main Car & Truck applications 3959512 - 1962-67 327 2 bolt main service replacement block (will be stamped with the engine code suffix "CE" to identify as a service replacement engine)

Perfect guys! Just what I needed to know. As always, thanks to everyone for all of the help and ideas. Each time I ask a crazy question, I learn a lot. Thanks again! Mike.
