The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area The Tool Chest Disc Sander Recomendation

Gonna start sanding the truck down. Couple of layers of paint on this thing. Any recomendations for a good disc sander. I've gone the cheap route in the past on tools and they always break down so wanna get something that works good and will last.

Any advice on starting this project would be much appreciated. Never did it before

If you don't need a sander for other jobs in the future...
Just rent a compressor (unless you already got one) and an air powered large diameter random-orbit disc sander and several 40 grit discs.
That's what pros use, because it's easier and faster and gives the results you want.

Even the more expensive little electrical ones will overheat which is hard on the bearings and it takes forever.

Another alternative, instead of using sander disks, get one of those 3M paint stipper disks. They look just like a really coarse scotch brite , usually black in color. They will take the paint right of rather quickly, and do not clog like sandpaper. You can find them at any hardware store. I think that the pads themselves can be installed on on angle grinder or random orbit sanser, they attach with hook and loop on the backside.
