I think I screwed up as the cam is in and one bolt goes in behind it I think. Oh well it's Monday

I don't recall there being any hex bolts at all on the cam thrust plate. But if you're talking about the plate that goes on the engine block, yes, that has to be installed BEFORE the cam. The flat head screws for that get tightened then staked to keep them in place. I think 1/2" or maybe 3/4" would be correct for the hex bolts.

There are two screws that secure the cam thrust plate to the front plate. I'd suggest using blue (not red) LocTite on the cam plate screws. No lockwashers. Don't forget the spacer between the cam plate and the cam.
