I'm not sure which category to put this under, but I was hoping that someone could suggest a good brand and length for a ratchet strap-type situation to keep the hood of my 1946 Chevy 1/2 ton truck down during transport on a flatbed car trailer. We just finished restoration yesterday and I'm taking it to Frog Follies (2hrs away) next weekend. Until everything is 100%, this winter, I want to ensure that my hood doesn't blow off on I-69. I thought there might be a preferable way of doing it vs just slapping a ratchet strap on and scuffing paint. My Google searches keep bringing up a handle loop and a 12" flat piece to attach a kayak to the roof. 😅 TIA!

Put a rope around the latch. Wrap it inder the radiator and tie off around the bumper.

Your hood is similar to my '37. Best way I could see to hold it is to figure out how to get a bungee to hook the hood levers on each side and pull down under engine. If you try and go out over the fenders, the hood sides will flap in the wind. At a show once, someone unlatched my left hood when I wasn't around, I hit the highway without knowing it and the hood came flying open. Lucky no paint damage, I do a walk around when I leave it now. You could reach up from underneath and hook the inside of the hood latch mechanism with bungees.
Can't recommend going over the top!

I'm kinda in the same mindset as Joe H. But instead of hooking the outside hood handles I think you could hang/dangle a couple of bungee cords on the inner side panel latch rod guide brackets (2 on each hood side panel, 1 front and 1 rear) on the inside of the side panels when closing the hood. Then crawl underneath and a hook the other ends of the bungees to the frame to hold them down during transport. This would completely eliminate any possible wear on the exterior paint surfaces and should still be secure enough to safely transport your truck.

Let us know how things work out.

Thank you for the suggestions! I hadn't thought about bungee cords. That's an excellent idea. And good idea on the walk around, Joe. I knew I'd get some good ideas here. Will do, Gdads!

Why not just back the truck onto the trailer? It would be difficult, if not impossible to blow the hood open that way.

I've worked for five years to get to this point, getting it to the 50th annual Frog Follies (this weekend) was what drove the final leg of restoration, and I'd rather be safe than sorry. Especially considering the fact that the hood is in near perfecti condition, and I have no idea what a replacement would cost or where I could find one.

Glad the brainstorming has been helpful. Maybe you would grace us with a bunch of pictures of your truck at the show??? We'd love to see where "Bruno" is at these days. Post them in your DITY Gallery thread as a progress update. grin
