It looks like there a scratch in the paint is it common for the block to be cracked. Is there a fix for it

The engines are zero or low pressure so there;'s really no force being exerted internally to push coolant through the repair.

There are also a number of threads like this one started by T-Doug that offer info on Otto's suggested method of crack repair. If you want to read more in earlier posts, use the Stovebolt Search and look for "cracked block repair". There's a bunch to see and read to offer some tips and help.

It involves stop-drilling both ends of a crack, and installing a series of overlapping threaded plugs with thread sealant on them to eliminate the crack and replace it with solid metal. It's labor-intensive, and somewhat expensive, but it's very effective. Jerry

I was taught a sealant wasn't necessary on the plug threads as rust would form very quickly and seal the joints. My crack was a long one, about 9" long. I drove the truck about 9 months after that and then used it to tow my wife's car from Texas to Connecticut and sold the chevy there. It never had another leak. The only difficult part is drilling the overlapping holes.
