Much more accurate (and effective) than the tonnage of "dumb" bombs the B-52s I rode out of Okinawa delivered. Every BUF that we launched carried 34 750 pounders in the bomb bay, and 24 500s under the wings. That's 37,500 pounds per plane, and we launched flights of three planes 24/7 for many years!

I hear that, Jerry. At first, they tried to call me up, being the T-34C ace that I am. I said, "What about Hambone??" and Pete said "No, the Iranians are *expecting* Super Hornets." But, alas, Peggy said "No." So they had to go with Plan B. It worked. smile If I could have accepted the orders, you would have been my first choice as a WSO in the AT-34's back seat smile

I think the plan was that once we popped on the Iranian radar, a lone T-34C with a single Mk 84 strapped to the belly and flown by two bearded old guys would have them rolling on the floor laughing so hard, they wouldn't even see the real strike package coming. So instead, they resorted to stealth.

There would have been some nice medals and a parade, too. Oh well....

It would have been a real honor, flying as back-seater on that mission! Sort of like the erratic driver who left the local watering hole at closing time, weaving all over the road. When the cops stopped him, he was stone cold sober- - - - -"I'm the designated decoy!"
LOL!

Back in the 66 to 70 time frame the best of the dumb bombs were a Mk 82 Snakeye with folding fins on the rear.At times a 130 or Air America would roll a 1000 lbs out to clear areas. Way to go USAF from a old 46250 arament specs!

Remember the "daisy cutter"- - - -AKA "Instant LZ"? 15K lbs. of jungle-evaporating high explosive that could clear a 100 yard diameter landing pad in dense jungle in an instant! Dropped from a USAF C-130!
