Adjust the regulator if it's a Delco Remy. Instructions for adjusting the VR are in Section 12-5 through 12-11 of the 1948-1952 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual. Specifically adjusting the voltage output Section 12-10.

Clean the points with a couple passes of 1500 grit sandpaper and alcohol.

Be sure you're working with a fully charged battery before attempting to do any adjustment of the voltage regulator points. Chances are the current regulator (behind the "ARM" wire) is controlling the current flow into a low battery at its intended setting- - - -35 amps. You can simulate a fully charged battery with a 1/4 ohm resistor connected in series with the BAT wire- - - -use four 1 ohm 100 watt ceramic resistors wired in parallel to make a high current 1/4 ohm resistor. The correct voltage regulator setting is 7.3-7.5 volts for a 6V system, or 14.5-14.7 for a 12 volt.
