Or does it matter? I want to do this right as I had a leak on the intake manifold and I pick it up at the machine shop tomorrow...wish me luck. | | |

I seem to remember the manifold being the tight side, with the rings a slip fit in the head. The important thing is to be sure the ring stays across the joint, and doesn't get pushed too far one way or the other. Even with a good-fitting manifold assembly and a good gasket, there will be a vacuum leak if the rings aren't there.

They are supposedly there to make assembly alignment easier. I left them out at first but could never stop the leaking so put them back.
If you had the manifolds surface ground be sure to grind off the rings a small amount or the manifold won't toghten down enough to seal.
