replacing the rear axle oil seals in my 46 torque tube. modern seals (SKF). The old seals were in with the seals outward away from the differential, all info says the new modern neoprene seal should go inward toward the diff. followed suit and inserted seal toward diff with some gear oil as lube. noticed that the oil has pooled in the bottom of the seal inside the hollow lip. To me this looks like a leak waiting to happen. Has anyone used the modern seal in their torque tube and which way did you insert them?

I replace my axle seals and not sure about inward vs outward. The side with the spring around the seal goes inward. At least that's how I did it.

Utah, thanks for the pics. I'll post a pic of mine shortly. And the break pic is a lottery win. Thats next up. I have pics of mine old and crusty for reference. Nice and new is so much easier to see.

Any lip seal I've seen gets installed with the lip pointing towards the lube you are trying to keep from leaking out.

The free end of the lip goes toward the center of the axle as Bill pointed out.

Yours is installed BACKWARDS.

The lip seal, and the garter spring points inward toward the differential. Some seals have a second lip outboard of the fluid sealing lip to protect the main seal from dust and dirt.
