So, I was looking at the spare tire mount pieces and I think I have everything I need, although the threaded rod seems to be to long. The one Jim Cater sells is 27 1/2".
The old one that I have is 24 1/2" long, it also has a slight bend just above the short set of threads. It looks to have broken/cut and welded for a repair and is broken again at the weld. I assume the short threaded end goes through the fender and the longer threaded end goes through the piece that bolts to the cab. Dose anybody maybe have a drawing or a diagram of how this goes together and whether or not there is a slight bend in the rod and the correct length of the rod?
Thanks for any help with perplexing problem.

I will measure mine, I had a replacement made so it is slightly longer than the original. There should not be any bend in the rod.

Thanks for the picture, helps a lot to know what it should look like. What is the purpose of the 6"/8" piece of steel sticking up behind the tire? I thought maybe it was for some kind of locking mechanism but it doesn't seem to attach to anything.

The replacement rod is 29 1/2 inch and is about 3 inches too long, so the piece at the top is a spacer. The chrome attaching nut at the top is what the trucks had to secure the tire clamp, the cars had a T-handle.

Fast55 - If you're interested, the one Jim Carter sells says it's actually a 29" replacement rod as MS285 and the spare tire retaining nut as MS278 if you need that too.

that's what I forgot was the tire clamp that holds the tire down. That takes up the extra length. sometimes I can be such a dummy.

The spare tire retaining nut is what I have, had some chrome work to be done so I included it and got it chromed too. The guy who did the replacement rod is a machinist that always goes overboard with things that I ask him to do. Just wanted a plain steel threaded rod and he does aircraft SS polished threaded rod.

So it looks like there is a spacer on the fender that is angled to fit the curve of the fender, probably 2 one on top and one on the underside of the fender. And it looks like the jamb nut piece on the rod goes down over the unthreaded section of the rod. I guess I will have to hone that piece out and make a spacer for the lower section of the rod. also is there a long spacer up top under the long nut that tightens down over the piece that rests on the tire. I hope this makes sense when you read it wink Thanks for all your help.
