In regard to attaching the angle strips to the bedsides, I have no problem welding them on similar to the originals. But, I'm wondering what would be the disadvantage, if any, to attaching them with small bolts? Most of them would be under the fenders where they wouldn't show. It seems like that might have some advantages over welding, but I thought I'd check on here before going any further.

I chose to bolt mine on to provide a little flexability in the bed assembly process. There are 2 bolts that have exposed nuts (not covered by the fenders) on my 3600 which is (I believe) a long bed. If your truck is a short bed there may be less. I am using shortened bolts with acorn nuts on the exposed bolts.
Mine is a short bed but, at a glance, It still looks like I'd have a bolt or maybe 2 that would show in front of the fender. I like your acorn nut idea. I may go that way too. I'm not building a show truck any way. I just want to end up with a reliable old truck to use as a local driver for the rest of my days. Thanks

On my 66 short stepside, I used SS bolts & painted them along with the rest of the bed . Looks good imo and I’ve not had one person comment on them. Most people won’t even know the difference .
