I am looking for the type that the engine sits on top, where it catches the edges of the oil pan/block.I need to assemble the bellhousing/tranny etc but am not putting it in right away. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

All the ones I have seen use the bell housing mounting bolts. Perhaps if you put it on your shop crane....

i've done this using 4x4's and some cheap casters. make a square frame with wheels then 1 or 2 4x4's on each side of pan. gets real sturdy once the weight is on it.

Hey Vie...,I have used the wood crate that a "crate motor" comes in.Just put some cheap casters on it.Check with your local car dealer. They usually toss them in the back of the building.Good firewood when you are done with it.

I am not trying to be a pain, but I thought I would offer this to you for your general information.
I was once told that those chrome plated shopping carts cost the markets above $200 each. In most states you will see a tag on the cart that says it is illegal to remove them from the store property. In southern cal there is a cottage industry, where people go around neighborhoods, apartment buildings and vacant lots and collect them. They are paid something like $5 or $10 for every cart they return. A second cottage industry, is the repair of these carts. These guys go to the stores and steam clean, repair weld and replace wheels on the carts.
I read an article in the LA Times about ten years ago about plastic milk crates. The grocery industry in southern Cal alone, spent $1.5 million each year to replace the stolen crates. and that was ten years ago. Those crates also have a notice about ownership.
I'm sure these grocery companies are big hearted and pass the savings along to their customers in the form of lower prices.
I'm not crying for the markets, but theft of that magnitude affects the price of milk and groceries that some mother has to pay to feed her children.
End of sermon.

very good points Richard, but I'll also point out that [here anyway], shopping carts do have an 'end of useful life', and if yer in the right place ones that are rusted [wet coastal climate here] beyond recall, can be obtained for free - complete rusty one in my shed for future use, and part of one under a 283 grin

for the milk crates, I use them in my biz , so can attest to their value and the enormous $$$ loss to the dairies because of 'misappropriation', but they're also available to purchase new ..... from the dairies even

I have a friend that is Vice president of a market chain, I have a letter from her allowing me to be in possession of rusty shopping carts, I have used them for everything from engine stands to dollies to roll around a non running vehicle, to welding carts (with some modifications), etc.

So she allows you to ste.. Ok I try again; So you have permission to recycle old shopping carts. I'm sure that they calculated it through, I'm at the other end of the chain, I know what I get per bushel or per steer and somewhere down the line someone makes very good money. How about insurance or taxes write off, it's theft or costs of maintenance/upkeep. I'm not saying you can use them freely, but it doesn't hurt them that much. I rather buy a few casters, made for the job, then replacing them all the time. And I sleep better. grin

Hi all, would that engine stand work for a 216?

If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

I've got my engine with tranny sitting on my stand (just like this one) right now. It's ok but the stand seems strained a bit. I'd like to see a little heavier construction. I did bring the engine home from the shop sitting on it though (without bellhousing and tranny). It rode ok in the back of the truck.

I pulled my babbit 216 the other day and wanted to save my storebought stand for a 235.I didn't want to ditch the 216 so I whipped up my own stand with scrap 2x6's.I even put 2 wheel dollies under it so I could roll it around and I'm pretty sure I left enough room to pull the oil pan so I can still tinker with it.here are some pics. cool

Here's a pic of one I made out of 2" square stock. I have since changed the oil pan and made brackets to mount to bellhousing.

In the 30's Chevrolet assembly plants would assemble new engine by laying the engine block on it's side on a flat table, tappet side up, then installing everything with it in this position.

old rusty shopping carts have old rusty worn out wheels. if the wheels are not worn out the store wants to keep them. places like harbor freight have caster wheels for very little $. 2x4 or 4x4 lumber is found in the trash and makes great, adjustable engine stands. just 2 cents.
