Rebuilt 261 is up and running on 6 volt power, however when I pulled the cover off the regulator after running for break in I discovered it looks like the voltage regulator got very warm! Yes the generator was polarized before attempting to start. I reinstalled the cover and started the engine back up, if I remove the negative battery cable the engine stops running, I also checked the 6 volt generator after by removing both wires to check residual voltage as per Jerry’s post got nothing! If I start it up with the regulator cover off there is a whiff of smoke and serious heat from the coil in the regulator. When you factor in a generator rebuild and new 6 volt regulator the 12 volt conversion is a no brainer.
Front clip is still off so I’m thinking it’s the perfect opportunity to upgrade to 12 volt! Tech tip write up is going to come in handy. 👍
