Hi, I recently purchased a 1953 Chevrolet 3100 pickup with a 216 engine. It backfires when moving, but does not when sitting still when I accelerate. I changed the plugs and put points, condenser & distributor cap in it. Any suggestions on what the problem might be? Thank you.

Did it do this before the parts were changed .i changed points years ago when the points new to me came in two pieces and I thought the extra piece was for a different application ,well it was the spring to make the the points spring back without the extra piece it backfired on acceleration but not idling .

Did you keep the old parts? Put the old condenser back in and see what happens. If no change, put the points back in, and so on.

New condensers are mostly all made in China. They are absolute junk sometimes right out of the box. Contact Jon G on this site. He makes condensers with parts from Germany that will last 200,000 hrs. I have them in every vehicle I own.

I have another vehicle that was backfiring, missing, etc. Parts were all new. I thought the timing chain had jumped a tooth or something. Nope. new condenser failed in under 1000 miles. Same with another vehicle I own recently. Installed one of Jon's condensers and the improvement was immediate.

Does the vacuum advance work? Work the throttle manually and watch the dizzy. It should rotate as rpm increases.

Your mechanical advance weights may be gummed up or a return spring has broken.
Even if this isn't what is causing your problem, if the distributor hasn't been disassembled in its lifetime, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take the distributor apart and clean it up.

I'm a little late, but thank you for your advice. I finally got around to changing the points and condenser. I did what you suggested and it was the condenser. What a relief! Thank you again.

Did you replace it with one of Jon G's condensers? If so, you'll never have a problem with it again.
