About this time last year (actually much later: January 18), in the News Corner we had the Fibonachu's 1958, Frank (below), and directed folks to the Engine Shop. We suggested they fill up on carbs. We had just finished a bunch of Tech Tips on carburetors and it was a great opportunity to promote those tips.
This year, most of the country is (or is about to) to get whammed with really awful weather. Some Bolters have already posted in the Side Lots how the weather is affecting them, what their preps are, and a few tips on dealing with it all.
For those who don't identify with a particular group, or just want to post here, this is a good spot for it. And pictures! We always like pictures.
This time, the image we are using (first one at least), was posted by Wally / Montana, as part of a thread in GTT, "Winter Work" that EdPruss started. That's a great picture.
Stovebolt HQ (now in NE AL) currently has temps at 52 but a wind advisory. It's coming in tonight from the West. We're fixin' to have a little snow ... maybe?
Keep warm.

Here's a pic from December 2023. There's most of an AD truck under there. But currently there's only about an inch of snow on top of the now completed truck. And we've warmed up from the teens to the 20's as far as temps.
Y'all stay warm down there.

I can vouch for the cold and the very wintery weather here in the central Midwest. Storm system in the KC area started last night with freezing drizzle/rain which built up about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice overnight, followed by some pre-dawn snow which built up to over an inch on top of the ice when I took the first 2 pics below just after sunrise. The remainder of the daylight hours included continued snow ranging from very light at times to heavy. Pic 3 taken about 4:45pm local time. I think we are now at about 6+" deep with more heavy snow coming yet tonight as you can see in pics 4, 5 and 6.
Pic 7 is my answer to hunkering down to wait out the snow and cold - one big pot of chili! Temps have ranged from a high of about 24 F down to 14 F with current wind chill at -3 F. Folks a little farther North of us have more ice and snow. Wasn't long ago that a news flash announced that Kansas State Patrol has closed all highways, including interstates, from the KC Metro to about 270 West due to extreme weather conditions causing multiple crashes, roll overs and vehicle strandings.
One of my grandkids lives in downtown KC and said last night and through today they have had to close multiple roads and highways. Reported many vehicle crashes due to folks trying to drive on the hilly roadways and sliding into parked vehicles or immovable objects.
Hope everyone can stay warm and comfortable through this. We just had our very first pass of the city snow plow (1 pass only) on our designated Emergency Snow Route road. Clean up is going to take a while.

WE got about 1/8 inch of ice on top of about 1 inch of snow, then another 3 inches of sleet and snow mix. All roads are covered but passable if you go slow. I also seen this morning that almost all interstate highways all across Kansas are closed.
Headed outside now to de-ice the Tacoma and stuff the wood stove, may even take some pictures to send to Tim down under.

Oh, the first time baking ham came out real good! When I make chili, I want a spoon to stand up in it with no crackers and very little beans.

Bill - It's not "Texas" chili. My Mom's recipe dating back to the Depression (when she was a young 'un) when you had to add a bit to stretch the food out to feed a passel of hungry mouths and stretch every penny. I've made it her way since forever.
Don - since it was just beginning it's cooking process, it looks a little on the thin side. Trust me when I say you can stand a spoon up in it and carry it to the table without the spoon falling over when it's ready to eat.

Digging out in prep for scheduled "Grandpa Duty" tomorrow was a chore. Had to clear at least 1 vehicle and driveway width to the street to be able to do grandkid transport early tomorrow morning. Took the better part of the day as I can't swing a shovel non-stop these days. The sun helped a bunch, even though it never got over 20 F today. Also got some last minute help from one of my neighbors who came over and helped clear the last couple of feet of heavy snow from the end of the driveway, where the snow plow had pushed the snow from the street.

OK, You guys must have sent the weather up here. After weather in the teens with no snow, we have 38F and rain on top of frozen pavement. It's been entertaining watching some of the cars trying to get up the road outside. I'm staying in the rest of the day.

Normally, about this time I change that News Corner to something different. This polar vortex seems to be getting a better part of the Bolter area.
So ... how cold is it here in this part of the South? We are expecting temps to drop to 9 Sunday night and stay cold for a chilly bit. We're suppose to get snow tonight and tomorrow. If we do, I hope John can post some pictures.
Up on the Mountain, things pretty much will stay at a standstill. It's a big drop from here. We've got a big post of Western Mac cooking now.

I think y’all brought the cold down with you. We will be in the mid 20’s all the way down here starting Sunday for the next 3 or 4 nights. Lord knows we don’t know how to drive on ice and snow 🤣😂🤣
Please don't tell my wife how much this thing cost!

Alright, I know us Southern Folks don't really have a right to complain about Winter weather, but DANG.. With the possibility of Snow and Ice into South Georgia, Alabama and Northern Florida it something to take serious.
For those of us that have never experienced an Ice Storm the possibilities of power outages is very real. Please take the time to prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. Hunker Down Y'all and stay safe and warm.

How about a little west of that. New Orleans, so 'they' say, is expecting up to 4". Mississippi Gulf Coast is expecting the same. I'm west central, 'they' are telling us about 2" here.
I hope and pray that everyone is staying warm in this cold weather. It’s currently 28 with windchill that drops it into the teens here in southern Texas. If it’s that cold down here, I’m sure it’s really cold up north!
Hopefully you all have more garage space than I do so you can work on projects. Looks like I have to wait for slightly warmer weather.
For you folks up north, couple 2 or 3 inches of snow is just enough to make you mad. But we're not geared for it down here....we can't operate in it.
But I'm pretty sure Southerntruck and I will agree on this.....come on down and visit us this summer...when it's 98-degrees and 75% humidity....now that's some 'fun'.
The news stories are reporting that besides the snow itself, these folks have no snow clearing (plows and the like) equipment. I watched some video of a storm chaser on I-65 (AL) and he was heading south ... towards Mobile. Incredible.

20° with 3” of snow here in SC and I thought I was getting away from “Old Man Winter”. It is 30 degrees warmer then upstate NY and I have no plans of shoveling. LOL!

We lived in Milledgeville GA for 4 years. We got 15 inches of snow one time. I called the city police dept to offer my chains (bought when we lived up north and west.) The guy said "What are chains?"
Is M'ville up in the hills? Nope, elevation = 330 ft.

33 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.
We had to find some long pants and even a jacket this last month here in Crystal River Florida. It was something. My roommate from school is in Watertown NY and I try not to gloat too much. Now if I could just find the rest of the garage that blew away in the last hurricane (fortunately, not really, just kidding) I have started up again on the 49 Clamshell carryall. I have it off the frame and am at the reassembly stage. Welding jobs, and engine rebuild, trans and rear end are all together. I did change the gearing out on the rear end so that it will go faster than 45. It has tube shocks on the front and I am having a heck of a time finding the right length and end attachments. All the parts stores want is a part number...They get annoyed when I take the old shock in and ask them to match it...cant figure out why. Hope all of the bolters in the cold country are safe and well. John 1949 Carryall (burb)
