I noticed my 1950 chev truck with a 261 was missing in the bell housing the fly wheel pan. I ordered one on eBay (see picture) and I quickly placed it on the bell housing and it seemed to be a perfect fit. So I degreased it , cleaned it , sand blasted , primed and painted and went to put it on and the four holes on the pan do not align with the four holes on the bell housing . But interestingly two holes on the passenger side align and the pan seem to be centred over the flywheel. I am thinking of simply drilling two new holes on the driver side and see what happens.

But I must be missing something as the part is apparently for a 1947-1953 chev or gmc truck.

My original transmission was the sm420 and I replaced with a t5 but that shouldn’t have anything to do with my situation ? Can anyone enlighten me?

If the pan flattened a bit, that would push the holes out of alignment. Try bending it slightly to line the holes up. It looks to me like the proper cover.

I measured the pan holes centre to centre back 9 inches and housing holes 9 3/4
Front pan holes 15 1/4 and housing 15 3/4
So too much difference to bend

Maybe that pan is for the 3 speed? Don't know if they're different. I'll measure the spacing on mine.

I just went out to measure my pan and it, too is 9 3/4" and 15 3/4" and it's a 3 speed transmission. So it's the same spacing as your housing holes.

Who knows what that pan you have is supposed to be for?

I have a bell housing in my garage I could measure if you need it. But drilling holes to fit would work too.

Same bell housing was used from 47-53. GM parts wiki confirms it. Bell-housing changed in 54.

Cover

If it works by just drilling a couple of new holes, I would go for it!

Rick, Your flywheel housing is a '54 (probably has angled motor mounts - '47-'53 motor mounts would be vertical where they bolt on the housing.)
See the attached pic.

Interesting, I was thinking I saw somewhere here that the motor mounts for a '54 were angled. I guess the bolt holes for the flywheel cover are the only real differences. I have a bell housing sitting in my garage with a casting number of 3701433 which translates to a 48-53 truck, with the flywheel cover slots spaced at 9-3/4", and has vertical motor mount bolting.
But the one on my truck is the same casting number as yours, so is a 1954 as well. The motor mount holes are vertical on it like yours are. That kinda makes sense, though because the engine was swapped back in 1954. It's not readily available to measure the bolt spacing, but there was a correctly fitting flywheel cover with it when I bought the truck.

Kevin,
The mounts on the '54 bell housing are angled. The casting number on my bell housing is 3702831.

Gord, there must have been a break at 1954, or an error in the 1929-54 parts listing I posted above, as it lists the 3701433 casting number as 47-53 and the 3835201 as 1954, but the 1929-1957 parts listing (attached) has both of those numbers as 47-53, and 54 as a separate part number (your casting number not shown.)
