One of my former Airmen gave me a relly COOL gift. He surprised me with this Anvil. It's heavy, I haven't weighed it but it has to be over 100 lbs. I haven't been able to find any markings on it, just the number "20" cast in one side. He knew I had been wanting one, well I'm not wanting one anymore... grin

That's an awesome anvil. In great shape, not like the used and abused one I bought.
There are anvil forums that can probably help you ID the make of it, if you really need to know.

Well, with all those hardened screws laying next to it, are you going to forge a Damascus kitchen knife for Linda?

Looks to be a cast steel body with a hardened steel plate welded to the top. Probably from the 40's or 50's.
It is in really good shape and hardly used.
But be careful, don't strike the hardened plate with a hammer as it could chip the edge or crack the plate.

Do you mean like this, Don? (see picture)
Notice that the hardy hole is chipped badly. And who the hell saws into an anvil? nono My plan is to weld those saw kerfs up some day.
Mine is an Illinois Iron and Bolt Co. make, cast base with steel top.

Yes Kevin, Hard faced hammers can really do some damage to a hardened steel face plate.
The really cheap anvils are actually cast iron and the horn or tail will break off if hit real hard with a sledge.
The one you show may be all cast iron, with the way it is chipped out around the hardy hole and how clean the saw cuts look. Plus the chip pockets in the face look to be all cast iron.
Don't get me wrong, anvils like that can really be a plus in a shop, if a good solid surface is needed to do some minor adjustment on things.

My anvil is definitely cast iron with a steel top. The welds around the edge of the top are easily visible. I think it's just been abused badly, in addition to the saw cuts. Zoom in on this picture.
I have used it for some various tasks in the shop.

When you get tired of your anvil, Google "anvil shooting".

Now y'all make me want to investigate the anvil that's been hanging around my shop for a million years.

Is it legal to launch an anvil in SoCal? grin

Only if you catch it on the way down.
