So, wanna build my required 6ft "Privacy" fence so I can get my trucks out of storage and into my yard to save money and keep from neighbors site! I want to have big front gate for trucks to get thru. Can the 8' sections of fencing be strong enough to be gate too? Want two for a 16ft opening. OR, should I plan on 6ft for a 12ft? Eight foot is not enough with Mirrors and wide beds on big trucks to get through easily. Maybe I'll put in two big posts real high and have a cross peice above with my "ranch" name across them, like.....The "G" spot! Cool! Then neighbor will think it's some dirty sex going on behind the fence. Any suggestions on how to put up fencing? I don't know how to get all the post holes centered so as not to have to keep "moving" the hole till sections can bolt up even and how do I run a string for straightness? Have to put in first and last poles to use string? How deep for a six foot fence? Can I use 8ft posts and keep 5ft out of ground? Post doesn't need to go to top of fence right? Only to the upper crossmember is what I think. Any sites on web with fencing hints/ideas? I know, like I always say....Go to Library! :p Any popular Mechanics or Science mags have fencing in them that you know of? Do I need a permit you suppose? Think I'll rent a post-hole digger, used to use shovel type, gettin' too old for that anymore!

I plan on putting my old jeep under the deck for winter storage. To do this, I will take 2 fence panels off and wiggle the post betweem them until I get it out (not a problem if I do it when the ground is moist). I think this would work for you - especially if this is for long term storage rather than as a garage. It depends on the amount of times you'd like to access this area.
Another option would be to install a removable post in either concrete or with bracketry to a firm base. Also, if you can avoid it, don't use a corner post for your gate. While tempting, you need the ability to spread the load out into the other posts. Another trick that helps in the long run is to have a center support that both gate halves rest on. Also, keep your gate as light as possible. I would use metal straps for the joints.

I will send you pictures of th privacy fence we built last summer. My posts were 7' long, with 2' in concrete about 8-10" in dia. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 | An eight foot wide double gate will be very hard to stabilize without an overhead connection between the posts. Part of the equation is how stable is the soil around the concrete.
I would use 6x6 posts and set them at least 3 feet deep. If your frostline is lower than that you will have to go deeper.
I would make a hole that is maybe 18 inches near the ground surface but gets bigger towards the bottom of the hole. Kind of an upside down mushroom. The bottom part should be about 24 inches x 24 inches. Make the bottom flat and not round, flat will resist more.
This will be a lot of concrete but the only way to have any chance of stopping the gate from sagging with time.
I also like the small wheel idea to take off some of the weight.
If the gate is part of a fence that continues in line, the rest of the fence will help keep the posts straight some too.
If at least one side can be attached to the side of a building you have all the strength you will need on that side.
A diagonal brace that starts low on the bearing post side and angles up towards the upper outside of the edge will not allow the gate itself to sag.
If you figure the weight of an 8 foot gate, it will all hang from the top of the post pulling it sideways. The higher the fence the more the pressure is multiplied due to the leverage effect. Not an easy project and if you want it to last expect to put in a lot of concrete on those posts.

| | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | | Anonymous Unregistered | I like your idea about the arch over the gate. This needs to be an expression of who you are. The real GL . . . Get two BIG honkin posts, none of this sissy 8 foot long stuff. These should be at least 24 feet long and spaced at least 24 feet apart. 12 inches in diameter should be good and then get another big honkin beam of some type to span between them. Then get a 2-1/2 ton COE with like a big propane or gas tank on the back and suspend this from the beam with chains going to the frame in front and back. Paint it up nice with paint bombs . . . heck, you could swap the COE with one of your MM tractors every few months to keep it "fresh" looking. Man, I really like that idea. I might do this myself! The neighbors will luv you man! :p | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 477 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2001 Posts: 477 | 7.62x39, | | | | | Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 427 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 427 | You can thank Ladybird for this. Got no idea what these last two posts are about! Looking like 6x6 posts, 16 long with 3ft in ground and a crosspeice with "ranch" name on it. Ideas for name: Rusty Truck Ranch G. L. Perry's The "G" Spot G. L. Perry's Truck and Tractor Restoration (will need a long board for this one! On gate, might run a cable from high on post down to center ends of gates that will help hold it up and swing out with it when opened. I could hang an old grill or some other parts from it. Maybe some headlights in fenders that come on when I drive in for yard lights! Yeah, that's it!

From that point in time, we have fought to find junkyards. Her campaign was catalyzed in the 70s and 80s by tree huggers pushing enviro-nazis to pass clunker laws which made the ball roll faster.

All you guys think of is "Old Trucks" If somebody posted "36-26-36" you'd be trying to figure out the cubic inches of "that engine"-LOL.

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 36 Member | | Member Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 36 | Consider this. Instead of a "gate" it would be far, far simpler to make two of the panels removable. They're somewhat heavy but then how often are you going to be moving them? (if they're too heavy make three 5 footers.) Make the center post(s) between the panels a medium diameter pipe post. Set it into a pipe that's buried 2 feet but only sticks out of the ground maybe 3 inches. Make set-in brackets that you bolt to the wood end and weld to the center post. When you need 8 feet just lift out the most convenient 8 foot section and lean it against the other. When you need more remove both panels and the post for a full 16 feet. Gates of that size are impossible. They always end up looking terrible. If you must gate it build a metal frame around the entire gate and criss-cross it with bracing and always put a wheel on it. You'll never be able to suspend it.
Set your end posts. Stretch a line. Set the rest of the posts on the line. Set the posts taller than you need and then cut them off when you're ready to hang panels. It's hard enough to manage two dimensions without having to worry about the height at the same time. Use a transom or a laser level (any rental place) to mark the height. Whoever you get your panels from can probably point you to a book that works well with their type of fencing. cheers | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 587 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 587 | Went wood fence shopping today. What junk there is out there! They have thin and thinner on the boards and panels. Was thinking of going with the dog-eared pickets and my own 2x4's. Lowes had best quality in panels and even had a small gate with bracing and hinges already on it. They had cleanest wood. Home Depot had little in stock and pickets were so-so. Menard's had poor fence and stock, pikets so-so. Everyone had great displays of fences, had to order most of them! Then of course the dang Vinyl crap, man I hate plastic!Bought a book on fencing, looks real informative and covers all the lay-out and even the repairs for when the fence goes bad 'cause you skimped on goods or install. Now, to stop raining! It's Monsoon season in NE Indiana. Course the ground would dig well if you could stand to be muddy!
