There is a cross piece to the tire mount that runs across from left to right at the bottom of the mount. Where does it go? I've looked and looked for a picture but can't find one leading me to think maybe it's mounted under the bed. Or is it inside the bed above the bed floor? Would love to see a picture of one installed. Image below is a very rusty one.

The '53 only had two vertical angle iron pieces similar to what an old bed frame was made out of. The rest of it was made of round stock hammered flat on the ends so they could be bolted on at the same locations were the bolts go to hold the angle iron to the bedside.

Thanks Carl. I bought the mount I have without knowing the year it came from. Other than short bed and long bed were there other differences to the mount? Maybe my '56 doesn't need the cross piece.

MickeyP, Can you supply a pic of the mount itself?

If I remember correctly, my 57 had a triangle to mount the tire to: horizontal piece at the bottom. You can see the two top braces

Here's the mount. It's the rusty piece across the bottom that I'm wondering about.

If you look at the pictures in this post of my 66 short stepside thread in the Project forums (scroll down a bit once you click the link), you’ll see some photos of the side mount including the bottom piece. Might not be exactly the same but might give you an idea of how yours should look.

I'll do that thanks.
Did it. That really helps. At least now I know for sure that cross piece goes under the bed.
